"Nobody Wants This" Anxious Attachment Style

The Anxiously Attached Girlies Are Feeling Seen "Nobody Wants This" premiered last year just as Mercey Livingston was going through a breakup. While Joanne and Noah were falling in love on her screen, Popsugar contributor Mercey was grappling with her own heartbreak — trying to dissect the anxious attachment style that usually interferes with her dating life. But ultimately, watching the dynamic between Joanne and Noah unfold "really helped me through a tough time," Mercey writes. Now that the show has entered its second season — still following the rather unconventional romance between a rabbi and an agnostic sex podcaster — Mercey is even more inspired by its depictions of the supportive (if aspirational) relationship at its center. "Too often, we see unhealthy dynamics glorified in Hollywood (see: the anxious person who falls for the unavailable and avoidant 'bad boy')," Mercey writes. But "Joanne and Noah's relationship just feels real and has depth." In fact, what makes the show special, Mercey says, is Joanne's arc as she "heals" her attachment style. "During season one and the beginning of season two, Joanne appears to have an anxious attachment style, often rushing to worst-case scenarios and letting her fear of love get the best of her. But because Noah's attachment style is more secure, she begins to feel more comfortable," Mercey writes.  Even as Joanne and Noah navigate their differences, and occasionally conflicts, their relationship is sturdy. "Seeing Joanne transform her attachment style from anxious to more secure is one of the biggest wins of this show," Mercey writes.
