What I Wore to Run Disney Like a Princess

For anyone who doesn't know how Brooks and runDisney are related, let me catch you up to speed. Brooks has been designing the iconic Disney running shoes you see everywhere for years now, from my personal favorite, the Mickey Mouse Ghost 17 ($170), to just-released styles like the Moana Adrenaline GTS 25 ($175). When the Brooks team invited me to run a race during the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, I might've shouted a bit too loud. (I really don't remember, I think I blacked out while reading the email, which tracks for a certified Disney Adult.)

Naturally, the idea is to dress up like your favorite princess, and mine is Ariel from "The Little Mermaid," in case you couldn't already tell. I called in the Her Universe Ariel Athletic Dress ($70) for the foundation of my look, and tacked on the Brooks Convertible 2.0 Sports Bra ($65) to reference Ariel's shell bra and Brooks Hyperion Elite 5 ($275) to bring in a touch of red for her hair. I was apprehensive about running in a dress for the first time, but by the time I crossed the finish line, I was fins down impressed by the make and support of the functional design. I even asked other race-goers to rate my 'fit throughout the morning.

The rest of the weekend entailed unforgettable experiences hosted by Disney and Brooks, from Disney Princess Yoga to a private fireworks cruise and Garden Custom Massage at the Grand Floridian Spa. To cap off the weekend, I put together the below video so you can get a feel for what it was like to run like a princess — and decide which activewear dress is calling your name.

Influenced: A Carolyn Bessette Kennedy-Approved J.Crew Sweater

As a fan of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's '90s minimalist style (who can ignore it these days with the hype around FX's "Love Story"?), I was honored to chat with the series costume designer Rudy Mance. He studied the '90s icon like you wouldn't believe, alongside collaborative actress Sarah Pidgeon, who portrays her in the show. Rudy gave me the scoop on his team's recreation of Carolyn's wedding dress for Pidgeon, and the story is pretty brillant.

One accessible piece he put her in is this J.Crew 1988 Rollneck Sweater ($98-$118), which is a fitting neutral for Carolyn's wardrobe that subtly references the prominence of J.Crew as a popular '90s brand, while offering viewers a "way in" with a look they can actually replicate today.

"I always tried to be as true to the time period as possible, but we're not making a documentary here, so whenever you do a period piece you do have to look at it through a modern audience's eyes," he says. "Like any period piece I take on, I toe the line between what is historically accurate, but also how it will translate in modern times."
