Runoff favorite?

Congressman Barry Moore holds a decent polling lead over Jared Hudson in their Republican runoff campaigns for the U.S. Senate, reports AL.com's Ruth Serven Smith.

That's not a big surprise, with Moore having placed first in the primary and touting his endorsement from President Trump.

But Hudson opened eyes with his surge in that race. He managed to push Attorney General Steve Marshall from the race, and he's certainly not out of the runoff yet. The Club for Growth Action poll has Moore polling at 53% and Hudson at 36 percent. Note that Club for Growth is a political action committee that has supported Moore.

The runoff election will be June 16. Both major parties will have runoffs for nominations to the position.

Attempted arrest turned tragedy

Authorities are charging a man in the death of his sister after Tuscaloosa deputies opened fire when he pulled and aimed a pellet gun, reports AL.com's Carol Robinson.

A Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit spokesman said the deputies were serving a felony warrant on the 36-year-old man. They say the 43-year-old woman tried to conceal his identity and, when deputies ordered the man to remove a face covering, he pulled the pellet gun and pointed it at them over his sister's shoulder.

They said the pellet gun was indistinguishable from a handgun.

The woman was killed, and the brother suffered life-threatening injuries.

Investigators who aren't affiliated with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office took the investigation and have obtained a warrant for manslaughter for the man.

Crimson Tide's momentum

The University of Alabama softball team won its opening game in the Women's College World Series, reports AL.com's Matt Stahl.

Jocelyn Briski struck out nine and Brooke Wells hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth as the Tide defeated UCLA 6-3 to advance.

Alabama next plays Nebraska at 6 p.m. Saturday. The Women's College World Series is played in Oklahoma City.

RIP Clarence B. Jones, MLK's lawyer

Clarence B. Jones.

Attorney Clarence B. Jones, who was present when the Birmingham Campaign was planned by civil rights leaders in 1963 and later snuck Martin Luther King Jr.'s writing out of Birmingham jail has passed away, reports AL.com's Greg Garrison.

While MLK was jailed for leading a march without a permit, Jones brought him newspapers. In the margins of those newspapers (and on other pieces of paper) King wrote pieces of a report that would become "Letter from Birmingham Jail."

That open letter, with its call for urgency in the fight for racial equality, would had a profound effect on the nation.

Jones was also a speechwriter for King and contributed to King's "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963 in Washington. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2024.

Clarence B. Jones was 95 years old.
