Friday Fixations: The Sunday Scaries of Summer

Over the last few weeks I’ve noticed people treating August like it’s the Sunday evening equivalent of the calendar year. You know, the time at the end of your weekend when you start getting the Sunday Scaries? In this case, people are giving themselves the Sunday Scaries for an entire month, mourning the end of summer before it’s even close to over. Halloween costumes are being planned, people are talking about being ready for “crisp fall weather” (barf), and the pumpkin spice latte memes are making their way to our feeds.

But I’m here with an important reminder: we still have 25 days until fall, and it’s time to start acting like it.

No, I don’t have air-conditioning in my tiny one-bedroom apartment. Yes, I am sweating by 10 a.m. simply from existing. But please, for the love of all that is holy, do not make me think about putting on a pair of knee-high boots and a turtleneck right now. Now is not the time.

We can argue all day long about which season is superior, but seasonal depression isn’t named after the summer — just saying! We have plenty of time to mourn it when it’s actually over. For now, can we please stop rushing through what’s left?
