Alabamians who died on this day 25 years ago

It's Friday, y'all!

Twenty-five years ago, I was sitting in the student lounge at Jefferson Davis Community College (now known as Coastal College) in Brewton, Alabama, hanging with friends between classes when we heard the news. I vaguely remember being glued to the one sizable television in front of the couches, peering over other students' heads who'd gathered around, all staring in disbelief. The bells rang to usher us to our next classes and I recall this collective freeze of "what do we do now?" But finally, off we went, in a daze while also buzzing with questions and an anxiety about the unknown that we'd never felt before.

I was a freshman, only a few weeks into my new adventure as a student in a neighboring town, navigating new and old friendships alike. It wasn't until I got home that evening that I understood the gravity of the situation, and I'll never forget thinking about my three best guy friends who'd all just joined the Marines earlier that summer.

Like many of you, that day lives etched in my memory forever, and the days that followed too.

Ten Alabamians were among those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Here’s a look at their lives and the legacies they left behind as America marks the 25th anniversary of a day that changed us forever:
